Linux Sites
Slackware - This is
my favourite Linux distro due to the fact that it's very clean and easily
configurable. Slackware or some customized version based on Slackware is
on all of my machines that run Linux.
Knoppix - I used
this to boot Linux on my tablet pc. This is good for anyone who wants to try
out Linux without wiping out a hard disk partition.
Linux from Scratch
- LFS is not really a Linux distribution. Rather, it's a set of instructions
that explain how to create a Linux distribution of your own. It's a great
way to lean how Linux works. I referred to it when I was working on my
fileserver project.
Kernel.org - Grab
the latest and old Linux kernels from here.
The Linux Documentation Project
- A comprehensive list of documentation for Linux. The HOWTOs archived
at this site are very helpful.
Caffeine Information
Frequently
Asked Questions about Caffeine - From coffeefaq.com
Programming Sites
QuirksMode -
Some good information about web programming. It covers JavaScript, DOM,
CSS and others.
Zvon.org
- zvon.com has a good CSS1 reference here along with a bunch of other web
programming tutorials and reference.
Devedge at Netscape
- This used to be a great source of information for HTML, JavaScript, and
other web programming tidbits but apparently AOL took it down recently.
mozilla.org is reportedly trying to revive it.
PHP.net - PHP homepage.
mysql.com - MySQL homepage.
Swing tutorial
- This is a tutorial for creating GUIs using Java/Swing.
Marco Schmidt's homepage
- He has a bunch of programming tips and tricks for Java. I learned a lot
about manimulating images in Java on his page.
Perl/Tk tutorial
- There's a powerpoint presentation that shows how to build a basic GUI
application using Perl/Tk. Click the "Click Here to Start" arrow.
PPM/PGM/PBM Formats
- This page describes the Portable PixMap and similar image formats. It's a
really simple image format that has a mode which uses plain ASCII numbers to
describe the image. You can use ImageMageick to convert it to other, more
popular formats.
Cool Stuff on the Web
Penny Arcade -
By far, the funniest web comic in town.
Megatokyo - I
don't care what people say, I still like it.
Alpha Shade -
This comic doesn't update as often as other online comics but the artwork
is amazing and the story is pretty interesting.
MrDowling.com - This
site has a bunch of information about the history of many regions around the
world.
Digitally Imported - Internet
radio with some great trance music. It also has classical, salsa, and jazz
channels.
How
many Mountain Dew's would kill you? - Click and find out.
